Update from U.S. Senator John Cornyn
Over the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of traveling home and attending key events in the Dallas – Fort Worth and Houston areas. I first went to the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Houston with fellow Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, where we saw firsthand the benefits of Texas’ comprehensive medical malpractice reforms made a few years ago. Together we met and talked with physicians who have relocated their practices to the area from outside Texas as a result of our malpractice laws. While some opponents of malpractice reform claim that these reforms only serve to benefit physicians, at Kelsey-Seybold this is hardly the case. There, administrators have used the $25 million they’ve saved as a result of tort reform and applied that directly to enhancing patient care by implementing a new electronic records system that improves efficiency throughout the clinic. Through tort reform, Texas has taken important steps to attract top-rate physicians to our state and improve patient care.
